Darshan remanded to judicial custody in Renukaswamy murder case

BENGALURU: Actor Darshan Thoogudeepa and his accomplices D Dhanaraj alias Raju, V Vinay and S Pradush were on Saturday remanded in judicial custody till July 4.

They were sent to Bengaluru Central Prison at Parappana Agrahara. The Under Trial Prisoner (UTP) number of Darshan is 6106. He is reportedly kept in a high security barrack in the prison.

The four accused were produced before a city court by Vijaynagar sub-division police investigating the Renukaswamy murder case as their police custody ended on Saturday.

Thirteen other accused were remanded in judicial custody on Thursday. The special public prosecutor (SPP) appealed to the court to shift some of them to Tumakuru jail as there are chances of an attack on them by fellow accused and fans of Darshan in Bengaluru central prison.

Tent cloth put around police stn removed

The SPP told the court that names and details of the witnesses have not been mentioned in the remand application because of possible threats to them by Darshan’s associates. Darshan’s advocates accused the police of committing procedural lapses by denying them a copy of the remand application. In 2011, Darshan was sent to Bengaluru central prison for reportedly assaulting his wife Vijayalakshmi.

Two more key witnesses in the Renukaswamy murder case will be giving their statements before the judge under 164 CrPC soon. Narendra Singh, the guard of the shed where the murder took place, has given his statements. The police are said to have collected 139 pieces of evidence in the case.

On Saturday morning, the four accused were subjected to medical tests at Annapoorneshwari Nagar police station. The police had a tough time while shifting the accused to the court around 3 pm. The actor’s fans followed the police vehicles. The vehicles carrying Darshan and other accused reached the prison around 4.55 pm.

The remand application submitted to the court by the police stated that the witnesses and some of the accused faced threats reportedly from Darshan’s associates. The tent cloth put around Annapoorneshwari Nagar police station was removed on after the accused were remanded in judicial custody.
