THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The State Bank of Travancore has signed an MoU with the Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI) to act as registrar to oversee and enhance the enrolment of residents for the UID project. Speaking on the occasion, SBT managing director P Pradeep Kumar said that as the premier bank in Kerala, SBT could help maximise the utility of UID, the applications of which are innumerable.

The UID number, issued under the brand name ‘Aadhar’, is generated on the basis of a combination of demographic and biometric data to every resident of the country. The three unique biometric criteria - fingerprints, iris scan and photograph of a person - generate a unique number that will not match with a set of different data.

Underscoring the high rate of accuracy ensured by the system, UIDAI deputy director-general Ashok Dalwai said that unlike the identifications based on demographics, the UID number would be free from manipulation.

He added that the system would be a ‘game changer’ that would have tremendous impact on the economic scenario. “It will be a huge step towards financial inclusion of the marginalised sections which do not have access to credit facilities,” he said.

He said that the association with SBT in the State would provide an impetus to the process. The bank will oversee the issue of UID numbers to its existing customers and also of others who wish to obtain the number. UIDAI is appointing various entities, including State Governments, large corporates and banks as registrars to accelerate the process. SBT chief general manager S Balachandran and UIDAI assistant director-general Surendra Babu attended.
