KASARGOD: It was a long walk for the parents of Sharmi, a member of the Indian kabaddi team which won the gold medal at the Asian games on Thursday.

Vettath Ulahannan, a daily wage earner, and Mary, parents of Sharmi, walked three kilometres to the house of a relative to watch the live telecasting of the kabaddi events in the television.

Sharmi’s house in Manjuchalil, a remote village located in Balal grama panchayat on the Kerala- Karnataka border, is not electrified. Electricity is yet to reach this hill area.

Sharmi studied for the Plus-Two at the Sports School in Kannur. She was qualified to join the Indian team while studying for the degree course at the NSS colle ge i n Thi ruvananthapuram.

The relatives and neighbours of Sharmi shared the joy at her house in Manjuchal by distributing sweets and bursting firecrackers.
