ERUMELI: Police on Thursday evicted around 50 activists of Bhoosamara Janakiya Aikya Munnani who tried to encroach upon the Cheruvally Rubber Estate, under the control of the Believers Church.The rubber tappers who came to the estate in the morning found the activists camping with materials to erect temporary tents. The tappers were held siege for some time, but the police rushed to the spot and defused the tense situation. Manimala CI T T Antony led the police team and took the activists, including their leader Balakrishna Perumal, into custody. The encroachment bid was noted for its timing, since the Revenue authorities had issued an eviction notice for the estate management recently, on the ground of nonsubmission of valid documents to prove their ownership.
The 2,000 acreplus estate, which was part of the Harrisons Malayalam Group till a few years ago, had undergone a change in ownership through a controversial deal.
