KOCHI: The police are trying to ascertain whether the two Italians who had fired on the fishermen had been under the influence of alcohol at the time of the incident. The police are looking at this angle, as no other provocation had been reported from the fishermen.

It was clear that the fishermen had not provoked the Italian naval men for opening fire, sources said.“The police have been questioning the crew whether Latorre Maxmiliano and Salvatore Girone were under the influence of alcohol. We will question the crew members too. Since medical examination is not possible now, we will be quizzing the crew and other security people in the ship to ascertain whether they were in an inebriated condition,” IG K Padmakumar said. “We cannot say they were under the influence of alcohol, but we will investigate all such aspects” he said.

The police verified the deck-log book and statements of the crew and confirmed that Maxmiliano and Girone were the shooters. “The duo was arrested on the basis of the deck-log book and the statements. It was not hard to find the suspects as both didn’t deny that they had fired on the fishermen,” police officials said.
