Prasanth Babu rejects police protection offer

The District Superintendent of Police here has issued directives to offer the service of two gunmen for the security of Prasanth Babu, former Kannur block secretary of Congress and municipal councillor, who also had served as a driver of the Congress leader K Sudhakaran MP, in the wake of the controversy generated as a result of his disclosure relating to the conspiracy behind the attempt to murder CPM leader E P Jayarajan.

The police couldn’t make the service of the gunmen available to him till Sunday afternoon since Prasanth Babu couldn’t be located at his residence in Talap.

Prasanth Babu, who was at his ancestral house in Koothuparamba, when contacted over the phone, said that  the police had informed him of the decision to provide him two gunmen.

He disclosed that he had told the DySP, Kannur, who contacted him, that he “needed no special protection”.

He would also give it in writing to the District Police Chief on Monday stating that he wouldn’t accept any special protection, except the normal security available to all others.

When it was pointed out that both the CPM state secretary Pinarayi Vijayan and Congress leader K Sudhakaran MP had asked the government to provide special protection to him, Prasanth Babu said, “Who ever said so, he wouldn’t accept such special security measures.”

Asked why he wasn’t ready to accept police security despite the emerging threats to his life in the wake of the political developments caused by conspiracy charges raised by him against K Sudhakaran MP,  Prasanth Babu said, “He wouldn’t like to live as an insecure man, and in constant fear of threats from any one.”

Congress leader K Sudhakaran MP had asked Home Minister Thiruvanchoor Radhakrishnan to provide special security to Prasanth Babu against the backdrop of the allegations of conspiracy raised by him, pointing out that “if any thing happens to Prasanth Babu the blame will be passed on to me.”

Demanding a detailed inquiry into the charge of conspiracy relating to the attempt to murder E P Jayarajan in Andhra Pradesh raised by Prasanth Babu, CPM state secretary Pinarayi Vijayan too had asked the government to offer protection to the latter.
