Four members of a family, including two children, died when their car fell into a canal after hitting a pillar, near Pazhayakandam in Cheruthoni, on Thursday night. Biju Michael of Mlakuzhi, 41, his wife Bindu, 38, children Ajo, 12, and Aska, 6, are the deceased, the police said.

Though the accident occurred on Thursday night, nobody noticed it until Friday morning, when passersby spotted the car in the canal. All four bodies were found trapped inside the vehicle.

Poor visibility in the area due to heavy rains was said to be the reason for the accident, police said.

According to sources, Biju and family were on their way to Bindu’s house at Erattayar in Kattappana. Normally, Biju used to take the Kulamavu route, but this time he chose to go via Cheruthoni for fear of wild animals.

When the four-member family failed to turn up until late night, the relatives went in search of them, but in vain.

The bodies were handed over to the relatives after conducting the postmortem at the District Hospital.
