Puninchitaya passes away

Scholar and founder of Tulu script Venkita Subrahmania Puninchitaya, 78, passed away on Friday afternoon following age-related ailments. He breathed his last at his house Gayathri Nivas at Ethanadukka. A renowned author, he was the first president of the Kerala Tulu Academy established at Manjeswaram. He revived Tulu language, widely spoken in Dakshin Kannada and parts of Kasargod, and discovered its old script from ‘Thaliyola’.

His works include Tulu Bhagavatham, Kaveri Mahathmya, Devi Mahathmya and Maha Bharatha. He has translated Vaikom Mohammed Basheer’s ‘Ntuppappakku Oranendarnnu’ to Kannada.

He is survived by wife Vanitha Puninchithaya, children Lalitha Saraswathy Kalluraya, Vijayaraj Puninchithaya, Vasantha Laxmi and siblings Rajagopal Puninchithaya, Purushothama Puninchithaya, Vamadeva and Rama Chandra.
