Difficult to get Election Commission nod, says Vellapally

All tall claims made by the SNDP Yogam about forming a political party of the Hindu communities, vanished into thin air as the outfit failed to make any such decision at its three-day leadership meet which concluded here on Sunday.

The decision to not form a political party was taken at an emergency meeting of the council here in which a resolution in this regard was passed, Yogam general secretary Vellappally Natesan told reporters. However, the resolution allowed the leaders to form political parties. The emergency meeting of the council was called on Saturday night after majority of the members favoured floating of a party to show the strength of the community while Natesan stood his ground to form a national Hindu league.

Before the emergency meeting, the representatives of different units of the Yogam stressed on making attempts to identify those belonging to different other communities having similar ideas to form a political association, he said.

Vellappally said that a final decision regarding forming a political party will be taken at the annual general body meeting of the yogam, he said.

In the ‘Naya Samarparana Rekha’ presented at the meeting, Vellappally favoured making the SNDP Yogam a force to reckon with in the political arena, give leadership to a group of Hindu communities, work for the unity of both Nair and Ezhava communities and form a political party.

Meanwhile, talking to Express, Vellappally said that there are technical difficulties in getting the Election Commission clearance for a communal party. When asked why the Yogam is moving away from its ideology of creating a society free from religious and caste bias, Natesan said that most of the people have misinterpreted the slogan of the SNDP. He said that the Ezhava community had suffered a lot in the early stages and only after the formation of the SNDP it had managed to secure social justice.
