Kerala’s first WIM Nimmy accorded reception

Kerala’s first Woman International Master (WIM), Nimmy A George was accorded a reception during the inaugural function of the all-Kerala Open 20-20 Chess Tournament at the Regional Sports Centre (RSC) here on Wednesday.

At the function arranged by the Chess Association Ernakulam, Excise Minister K Babu presented Nimmy with a memento and a cash prize of Rs 10,000.

Speaking on the occasion, the minister assured maximum possible government support to promote outstanding talents like Nimmy.

He also exchanged a few chess moves with the WIM.

 Presiding over the function, Hibi Eden MLA stressed the need for introducing chess in schools and the intervention of the government in this regard. Nimmy achieved the Woman International Master title at the Mayor’s Cup International Open chess tournament held in Mumbai last month.

Mayor Tony Chammany, Kerala State Sports Council president Padmini Selvan, Chess Association Kerala patron P V N Namboothiripadu and RSC secretary Manohar Prabhu were among those who offered felicitations.

Chess Association Ernakulam president M B Muralidharan and secretary M S Ananthakrishnan also attended the function to honour the young achiever.
