Suicide cases fall in State

In Kerala, as many as 8,431 suicide  cases were reported in 2011, down from 8,586  in the previous year, a 1.8 percentage decline.  In 2011, the highest number of suicide was reported in West Bengal followed by Tamil Nadu, Maharashtra and Karnataka.

As  many as 52 cities were studied on the basis of population. Durg of Chhattisgarh has been placed second after Kollam while Chennai with 2438 cases came third.

According to an official of the  State Crime Records Bureau, suicide rate is calculated by considering the population and death reported from a specific region. “Incidents of suicide are comparatively less in the state. But when it comes to the number of suicide cases against the population, the suicide rate goes up,” he  said. The positions of other cities are: Thiruvananthapuram,12,  Kochi, 27, Kozhikode,30, Thrissur,17,  and Malapuram and Kannur 48 and 36 each.
