The Meena Radio programme, which deals with children’s issues and rights, was officially launched by Chief Minister Oommen Chandy here on Thursday.

The Meena Radio or `Meenayude Lokam’ has been initiated jointly by Kudumbashree, UNICEF and All India Radio. The first episode of Meena Radio will be broadcast on Sunday from 4 p.m. to 4.20 p.m.

If the children of a country show brilliance and energy to surge ahead, then it will be reflected in the progress of the country, said Chandy in his inaugural speech.

Meena is an animated character promoted by UNICEF who stands for righteousness, smartness and goodness in children. She is always accompanied by her pet parrot Mittu. Both the characters are familiar to the children of Kudumbashree’s Balasabhas which is a platform for the little ones to discuss their issues.

Speaking on the occasion, Panchayats Minister M K Muneer said that the  Balasabha, which listened to the programme and responded well, would be awarded.

The theme song of Meenayude Lokam was released by Health Minister V S Sivakumar.
