Organ donation: Government for talks with Centre

Minister for Health V S Sivakumar said  that the state government would hold discussions with the Union Ministry of Health for easing the conditions of the Organ Donation Act, here on Saturday.

The minister was speaking to the reporters after visiting Swathy Krishna, the 17-year-old girl, who underwent liver transplantation, at Amrita Institute of Medical Sciences (AIMS).  “The liver transplant surgery could be performed only because of the quick intervention of Chief Minister Oommen Chandy.

“The media also played a crucial role. The Transplantation of Human Organs Act was passed by the Union Government in 1994. Therefore, the state cannot do anything without the consent of the Central Government,” Sivakumar said.

The Minister also interacted with the medical team headed by Dr Sudheendran who performed the transplantation surgery. AIMS medical director Dr Prem Nair, Sudhakaran and Dr Jaggu received the Minister at the hospital.
