KANNUR: The controversial speech made by Idukki district secretary of the CPM, M M Mani, on political murders admittedly carried out by his party has an unexpected  fall-out, apart from its legal consequences to be faced by the CPM leadership in the coming days.

The BJP leadership here has decided to launch a public campaign demanding re-investigation into the murders of  former state vice-president of Yuva Morcha, K T Jayakrishnan and former district secretary of BJP, Pannianur Chandran, in the backdrop of the disclosures made by M M Mani. The district leaders of the BJP alleged here that several leaders of the BJP had been murdered by the CPM as part of its Stalinist agenda of annihilating political opponents. Police investigations into these murders were either scuttled or manipulated according to its political design by the CPM during its rule in the state, they alleged.

They said that while awarding punishments to the CPM workers found guilty in the K T Jayakrishnan murder case, the Fast-track Court, Thalassery, had directed to take action against the police officials involved in suppressing evidence in the case. The BJP leaders also said that in the verdict on the Jayakrishnan murder case, the court had directed to hold a probe into the conspiracy behind the murder, but nothing had been done by the government in the state.

Said senior BJP leader P K Krishnadas, “We had already stated that the conspiracy behind the murder of K T Jayakrishnan had never been probed even after the Fast-track Court at Thalassery delivered its judgment. Our demand was ignored even by the UDF government that came to power later.”

Yuva Morcha leader K T Jayakrishnan was stabbed to death in an open class room at a school in Mokeri near Thalassery where he was working as a teacher. The District Court at Thalassery had sentenced to death five of the accused in the murder case. This judgment was upheld by the High Court, but the Supreme Court acquitted four of them and commuted the death sentence of the other to life imprisonment. He too came out of the prison on the basis of remission granted while the LDF was in power.

The CPM leadership here is yet to come up with its reaction to the BJP’s political move on the issue. The BJP leadership now demands that in the light of the public disclosure made by the Idukki district secretary of the CPM that his party had killed political rivals, the murders of K T Jayakrishnan and Pannianur Chandran have to be reinvestigated. Pointed out U T Jayanthan, district general secretary of the BJP, “The government  had already taken steps to reopen some of the murder cases consequent on the statement made by CPM leader M M Mani.”

The BJP has convened a gathering of social and cultural leaders and the public here on June 2 to go ahead with the demand.
