Thrissur, Kozhikode MHCs up for a revamp

New master plans will be drafted for the Mental Health Centres (MHCs) in Thrissur and Kozhikode.

The mental health centre here will be renovated as per the existing master plan, Health Minister V S Sivakumar said, after a high-level meeting at the Secretariat here on Tuesday.

The Minister said that the infrastructure facilities at all the mental health centres would be raised and more employees would be appointed in these hospitals.

In the mental health centre here, a closed circuit TV will be installed in the forensic ward. In addition, a new telecom facility will be installed. The de-addiction ward which is under construction now, will become fully-functional within two months. A new van will be purchased with the MLA fund. Once in a week, the services of one unit of doctors from the Medical College Hospital here, will be made available at the mental health centre.  As in the mental health centre in Kozhikode, establishing a printing and book-binding rehabilitation centre at the other centres will be under consideration. Steps will be taken to draft a state mental health policy. The meeting appointed Dr Anil Prabhakaran of the Psychiatry Dept of the Medical College here, Mental Health Authority secretary Dr D Raju and Health Department additional director Dr R Prabhachandran Nair for drafting the new policy.
