Road mishaps claim five lives in state

A 35-year-old woman died when a bike, which she was riding, collided with a private bus here on Tuesday. The deceased is Shyamala, wife of the late Valsalan alias Prakash, of Palanilkumkunnel House of Vedagiri, Athirampuzha.

Meanwhile, Shyamala’s nephew Amal, who was riding pillion, escaped with injuries. According to the police, after the bike hit the speeding bus, Shyamala was thrown away and the bus mowed down her.

Though the victim was rushed to the Medical College Hospital, here, her life could not be saved. The Gandhinagar police have registered a case in connection with the incident and  took the bus which plies on the Kottayam-Kallara route, into custody.

Auto driver dies

Changanassery:  An auto driver died when his auto rickshaw rammed into a lorry carrying wooden logs here in the wee hours of Tuesday. The accident took place at Poovamkadathu on Alappuzha-Changanassery Road near Parakkal Kalungu.

The deceased, Nassir, 45, is a native of Kizhamassery near Manikandavayal. Locals rushed Nassir to Changanassery taluk hospital and from there he was referred to Kottayam Government Medical College Hospital, where he succumbed to injuries at 5.30 am.

Police sources said that the lorry driver is absconding and they have taken the lorry into custody. A

case has been registered at the Changanassery police station.

One dies in bus-lorry smash

Taliparamba: One person was killed and 25 others suffered injuries when a private bus collided with a tipper lorry at Cherukalam here on Tuesday.

Shyju, 34, the driver of the tipper lorry, was killed on the spot. He was a native of Ezhom. Another person, Subhash, who suffered serious injuries was taken to the Pariyaram Medical College Hospital.

The bus was on its way from Taliparmba to Sreekandapuram as it collided with the tipper lorry.

Man dies in mishap

Alappuzha: Kannan, 18, of Parayanpallikizhakkathil, Nangiarkulangara, died after a container lorry hit the motorcycle he was riding, at Nangiarkulangara Junction on Tuesday. The incident took place at 2 pm. The body has been kept at the Harippad Taluk Hospital mortuary.
