KELSA to turn 'court'yards green

In a new initiative to protect the environment, the Kerala Legal Services Authority (KELSA) unit in the Ramankari Magistrate Court will distribute tree saplings to convicts, witnesses, advocates and other people who will be present at the court on the World Environment Day on June 5.

The Legal Services Authority, with the aid of Kerala Social Forestry Department, has planned to distribute about 14 species of plants, including mango tree, zapota, teak, manjium and other medicinal plants to the public and convicts.

Ramankari First Class Magistrate and the chairman of Legal Services Authority Kuttanad taluk, M E Aliyar, will initiate the distribution of the saplings.

KELSA unit secretary Arun said that the aim of the KELSA is to spread awareness about planting of trees to reduce global warming. The deforestation and cutting of trees are causing severe ecological hazards to the Kuttanad area.

The planting of trees will help protect the environment in Kuttanad,” Arun said.

Arun said that the KELSA has plans to conduct an environment awareness class on June 5.

The KELSA will also initiate another campaign against child labour in the taluk from June 12.

The aim of the awareness campaign is to make the taluk child labour free in a year.

The KELSA members will distribute pamphlets and conduct classes in various parts of the taluk for a year , Arun said.
