The Kozhikode Railway Police on Monday seized a revolver and five live bullets from a wayside vendor and arrested him. The officials said that Rafeeq Moidhu, 42, of Kunnummal, Muringodi, Peravoor, Kannur district, was arrested from the first platform of the Kozhikode railway station on Monday morning for creating a furore under the influence of alcohol. Later, he was booked for possessing arms and ammunition and a stolen property after a revolver and pellets were recovered from the bag in his possession.

According to the Railway Police, Rafeeq was held for creating unruly scenes at the Railway Station in an inebriated state. He first told the officials that his name was Mathai and he was hailing from Wayanad.

Later, during further interrogation, he said that the revolver belonged to Raghunathan, a civil police officer with the AR Camp, Thiruvananthapuram, and a friend of his. The duo had a drinking session on Sunday night, after which Rafeeq mistakenly

took the bag of the police officer in which the revolver had been kept. The officer was escorting Agriculture Minister K P Mohanan to Kozhikode.

However, Railway Police SI P Muraleedharan said that they had launched a probe into the statement given by the accused and that they had not confirmed that the revolver belonged to the police officer of AR camp.

“AR Camp officials will come to Kozhikode and will examine the gun recovered from the accused. A detailed investigation is underway into the incident,” he added.  According to the officials, the accused was involved in around 20 criminal cases including robbery and underwent punishment in five cases.

He was booked under various sections of the Indian Arms Act, 41 (1) D and 102 of the CrpC. He was remanded in judicial custody by the Judicial First Class Magistrate Court-I, Kozhikode.
