After two underage marriages were stopped in Thrissur and Malappuram districts a couple of weeks ago, another such marriage was prevented with the timely intervention of the Kozhikode district administration.

On September 30, District Collector C A Latha received an anonymous letter about an underage marriage planned for October 6. The Collector, with the help of the Special Branch, held an investigation and found that the contents of the letter were true. Social Justice Department officials stepped in and they succeeded in preventing the marriage.

The parents of the girl realised their mistake and no action was taken against them on humanitarian grounds. The incident undoubtedly is a pointer to the large number of unreported child marriages taking place in the state.

“In the wake of the recent incident, we are planning to conduct a meeting with Social Welfare Department officials to design effective measures to address the issue,” said the Collector.

“I don’t know why India took such a stand on the UN resolution and sure there must be a reason,” added Latha.
