Infanticide: Mother under police surveillance at MCH

Vijeesha, the main suspect in the murder of two newborn twins, whose dead bodies were recovered from a house at Kolahalamedu in Idukki on Friday, is under the close surveillance of police personnel at the Kottayam Medical College Hospital (KMCH).

Vijeesha, 23, who was earlier suffering from profuse bleeding, is now recovering.

The doctors at the gynaecology department said that the bleeding has stopped and she is slowly recovering from the fatigue induced due to the blood loss.

Two women constables from the Peermade police station have been deployed at the gynaecology ward of the Kottayam Medical College Hospital to closely observe her. The gruesome news of the infanticide came to public light, after Vijeesha and her husband Praveen, 21, a couple residing in a secluded house at Kolahalamedu in Idukki turned up at the gynaecology out-patient ward of the Kottayam Medical College Hospital on Friday claiming that the woman had had an abortion on Thursday and was suffering due to incessant bleeding thereafter.

Praveen, a wage labourer, is now in the custody of Peermade police.

“As she is not properly replying to our queries and is talking out of the context, the doctors at the psychiatry department were consulted.

“We are yet to get the report of the psychiatrist at the KMCH, who consulted Vijeesha. Most probably, she will be discharged on Tuesday and the police will then arrest her to conduct further questioning,” Peermade SI K Salim said.

He added that the parents of Praveen, who were residing at the same house, had told police that they were not aware of Vijeesha’s pregnancy and delivery.

Vijeesha and Praveen met at a factory in Ernakulam, one-and-a-half years ago, where they were working. They were living together at Praveen’s house in Kolahalamedu and got married on Thursday at a community wedding ceremony conducted by a voluntary organisation in Alappuzha.

Though Praveen told that he was aware of Vijeesha’s pregnancy, he claimed that he had no role in infanticide.
