Major Gold Haul at Kochi Airport, 3 Held

KOCHI: Officials of the Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI) on Friday seized 11 kg of the gold from three passengers who arrived from Malaysia at the Nedumbassery airport.

According to DRI officials, the arrested persons, who hail from Karnataka, had arrived by an early morning flight. They said the gold recovered from the handbags of the passengers was worth more than `3 crore.

“The trio was nabbed following a tip-off that a substantial quantity of gold would be smuggled through the airport. We had deployed our officials for checking persons who looked suspicious. We noticed the arrested persons passing through the green channel. The gold consigned in their baggage was seized during  checking. The arrested persons were acting as carriers for gold smuggling rackets. As the enforcement agencies mainly check for smuggling from the Gulf countries, this time the consignment was sent from Malaysia. We are interrogating the arrested persons for gathering details of the people who handed over the gold to them,” the official said.
