11,000 Houses for Fisherfolk

VAIKOM: The Government will build houses for as many as 11,000 fishermen within two years, the Chief Minister said here on Sunday.

He was speaking at the inaugural ceremony of the ‘Theera Maitri Vembanadu’ project, a state initiative for the empowerment of women from the coasts of Vemabanadu lake at the NSS Auditorium, Vaikom. The government’s stand on the Coastal Regulation Zone rule will be the same as that towards the Gadgil and Kasturirangan reports, he said adding that conservation of ecology with a sense of reality was the need of hour.

The project is being carried out by the Society for Assistance to Fisherwomen (SAF) implemented under the Department of Fisheries. The CM also announced a grant of `1 crore for the 8 stalls of Theerafed across the state in conection with the festival season. Speaking at the event, Fisheries Minister K Babu said that 10,000 more unints would be started under the Theeramaitri Project.Kottayam MP Jose K Mani conducted the logo release of the project and K Ajith MLA distributed financial aids.
