THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Showering her gratitude and praise towards the people of Kerala for supporting the Congress in the Lok Sabha polls, Sonia Gandhi was all praise for the hard work of Oommen Chandy government and the vigour and determination espoused by KPCC president V M Sudheeran in the running of the state unit of the Congress. “We’ve done badly in most of the states. But once again, people of Kerala have stood by us. Through your commitment to public service on a day-to-day basis, the trust of ordinary people was secured.
Kerala has set an example for other units of the Congress in states,” she said, addressing a meet here on Tuesday. “Your efficiency has been rewarded in the polls. It has to be taken to the local bodies polls and later the Assembly polls,” she said while also expressing high regards for the massive, booth-level grassroots revamp undertaken in the party. Sonia reminded that the core mission of the Congress was to protect the interests of common people.
We have to protect Aam Aadmi or what you call ‘sadharanakkar’, she said, drawing cheers from all around.
“Congressmen has always stood by the poor, women, scheduled castes and tribes and minorities. There is no one else to support these sections in our system but only the Congress,” she claimed.
“In Kerala, you speak to them and work for them,” she said and observed that the state has set a model again on this score for other states and Congress units.
Sonia also hailed the ongoing Quit Violence week observed under the aegis of the KPCC. “It is an excellent example of political mobilisation. It will have an exemplary effect in promoting democracy within the party and outside,” she said.
Presiding over the function, Sudheeran said that the Congress president had set off her chariot to regain the good old days of the party from the state and there would be no stopping now. He was also critical of the alleged communal designs, appeasing of corporates and opening of the flood gates of FDI in Defence and other core sectors.
Describing the booth-level revamp in the state Congress unit and plans to do the same up to the district-level before the end of August as a historical event in the last quarter of a century, Sudheeran asked party workers to surge ahead to ensure the continuation of the UDF government in state. Oommen Chandy extended ‘unequivocal’ support to Sonia in her endeavour to recharge the party.
