SHRC: Record Arrest of Persons Immediately

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The Kerala State Human Rights Commission (KSHRC) has ordered that if a person is arrested, it should be recorded immediately and not days after nabbing him.

The KSHRC instructed the Home Department and the State Police Chief to make sure that the person arrested was produced in the court within 24 hours.

KSHRC chairman Justice J B Koshy pronounced the order on a petition alleging human rights violation by police officials. Pointing out that the police should not torture the arrested persons, the Commission said that they would be responsible for whatever happens to the arrested persons. Even if they commit suicide, the police will be at fault, the SHRC chairman said. In the order, he said that the police officials should not conduct press conferences without the permission of the State Police Chief.
