KOCHI: The Jacobite Syrian Church has come out against the Syro-Malabar synod’s decision to allow bishops to permit cremation of the dead, in special cases, instead of the traditional burial.

According to a press release issued by the Church, cremation of the dead is against the Christian belief.

The Bible clearly states that ‘man was dust and unto dust he shall return’. The tradition of the Christian church does not permit cremation of the body.

The press release also stated that cremation would in turn result in the pollution of the atmosphere.

“Since the government has permitted the cell system for burial of bodies, space is no a major issue in Christian churches as bodies can be kept in cells,” a spokesperson of the Church said.
