Indian Descent Angela Basks in Miss India Washington Glory

KOTTAYAM: When Angela Goraphy won the ‘Miss India Washington’ title two months ago, she was known as just an ‘Auburn’ woman who grabbed the crown. But for the people of Kottayam, this American-born Malayalee is their daughter. With family roots in Mooledom, Angela is the daughter of Suresh and Latha Goraphy, of Srambikkal house. “It was a surprise, I never thought about winning the pageant,” Goraphy said at a press meet in Kottayam on Wednesday. The 21-year-old won the pageant beating 19 beauties from North India settled in the US.

Angela is now eyeing the Miss India USA Pageant in New York City to be held in December.Against the common belief, Angela speaks good Malayalam. She said she has already received offers for four films which she would consider positively.

Angela, an Auburn Mountainview High School graduate, is a senior at the University of Washington, where she is studying for healthcare administrator course. Trained in traditional Indian dance and self-taught in contemporary dance and acrobatics, she has been competing since childhood.

She is a dancer and lead choreographer for Pratidhiwani Dance, a non-profit organisation that puts on a few shows a year.
