MG Varsity VC Selection Gets Tougher

KOTTAYAM: While a meeting of the three-member search committee constituted to select the candidates for the post of Vice-Chancellor of Mahatma Gandhi University is slated to be held on Friday, the absence of a political consensus in the matter is expected to perplex the process of finalising the panel of names for the post, which is to be submitted to the Chancellor.

According to sources, V Prasannakumar, Professor and Head of the Department of Geology, University of Kerala; Babu Sebastian, Director, the State Institute of Educational Technology (SIET), Thiruvananthapuram; Baby Thomas, Professor and Director, School of Distance Education, MGU; K C Sunny, Professor and Head of the Department Law, University of Kerala, are a few names doing the run.

It is learnt that a political consensus is yet to be arrived at in the matter as discussions between the Congress, the Kerala Congress (M) and the Muslim League are still underway.

It is learnt that the League has approached the KC(M) with a demand to inter-exchange the VC posts of Calicut and MG universities among the parties so that Sheena Shukkur, the present VC in-charge with the League backing, can be elevated as new VC of MGU. The KC(M) has reportedly turned down the suggestion.
