Govt Schools in District Post Rise in Enrolment

KAKKANAD: In stark contrast to earlier trends, government schools recorded more enrolment of students this year whereas aided schools registered  a sharp decline in student strength. The surprising figures emerged when the Deputy Director of Education at the Civil Station here released the ‘Sixth working day’ report on Monday.

The ‘Sixth working report’ is prepared by the authorities six days after the re-opening of  schools in the district. Reports show that aided schools in the district have lost around 4,400 students whereas the total shortfall in the district is 4,832.

The positive trend emerging from the enrolment figures is that the students are increasingly opting for government schools. Earlier, in 2012-2012, around 4,997 had dropped out of government schools and the figures declined to 3,924 in 2012-13. Interestingly, owing to some novel attempt on the part of the state government,it came down to 2,334 in 2013-14 and to 444 this year.

The tale seems to be the same in the unaided schools as well. The number of students who dropped out of unaided schools was 9,084 in 2011-12 and 1,054 in 2012-13 but it touched 624 in 2013-14 and 878 this year.“A trend prevailing among the parents to admit their children to a CBSE or public school has resulted in the decline of students in aided schools,” said an official in the Education Department.

He also added that the implementation of the UID system in the state can also be cited as a reason. “Earlier, the schools used to manipulate the figures for their existence but it has changed now with the introduction of the UID system as the details of students have been digitalised,” source said.

The comparison of last four years indicate a positive shift of students to the aided school.

The data shows that the number of students moving to aided sector is rapidly increasing. In the meanwhile, a total of around 20,629 students were admitted to the first standard in various schools in the district this academic year and it is an increase of 3.3 per cent compared to last year’s.
