Applications for IDPs on the Rise

The number of people seeking international driving permits (IDPs) in the state seems to be on an upward trajectory.

KOCHI: The number of people seeking international driving permits (IDPs) in the state seems to be on an upward trajectory. Data available with the Regional Transport office here indicate that the department had issued 500 IDPs last year and the figure has touched 275 this year with six months to go.

The IDP is an identity document that allows the holder to drive a private motor vehicle in any country that recognises IDPs. “The trend is increasing as we are getting lots of applications for the IDP. Earlier celebrities and businessmen had opted for the IDP. But now many common people are also applying for the IDP,” said B J Antony RTO, Ernakulam.

Director Lal Jose, who is venturing on a trans-national vehicle ride had got his IDP recently. Actor Prithviraj had also acquired the IDP licence recently from the the Regional Transport office. For getting an IDP licence, one has to apply with their driving licence and passport to the RTO in a prescribed form. Along with that, a valid proof of Indian nationality, a valid Visa and three passport-size photographs should be enclosed with the application. “Normally it will take around 7 days to issue an IDP licence after the hearing process. The aspirant has to submit a fee of `800 for the licence,” Antony said.

People can enjoy fifty percent reduction on the fee while applying for a driving licence in a foreign country. The IDP can also be used as an international identity card.

“The validity of the licence will be one year from the date of issue. The licence is issued based on bilateral agreement between countries,” he added. The IDP can be issued only by the Regional Transport Officer and no one has the authority to issue such a driving licence.
