Kathirur Murder: Jayarajan Against Invoking UAPA

KANNUR: Even though the CPM has publicly denied any role in the murder of RSS leader Elamthottathil Manoj at Kathirur on Monday, the party has said that invoking sections of the Unlawful Activities Prevention Act (UAPA) in the case could not be justified and it would strongly protest the move.

Speaking at a press conference at the CPM district committee office here, district secretary P Jayarajan said that the UDF government was trying to appease the RSS by slapping UAPA in a case which, according to the FIR, was just “an incident of a man got killed and another injured.”

The sections of the Indian Penal Code were enough in the case, the CPM leader said while explaining the stand of the party’s district secretariat. Asked why the CPM was panicked about UAPA sections being invoked in a case in which it had no role, Jayarajan said that the Congress-BJP nexus was conspiring against his party in the case. The slapping of the UAPA is an indication of this nexus. He did not give a direct answer when asked whether the CPM wanted the charges under the UAPA be scrapped. “The FIR in the case has no reference to any crime against the country. The UAPA is widely misused for targeting minorities. There are instances in north India in which numerous innocent people were unjustly arraigned under the law,” the CPM leader explained.

“The Congress-BJP conspiracy in the case is evident from the Chief Minister’s response after meeting BJP leaders on Thursday. The government is carrying out a politically motivated investigation to satisfy the BJP,” Jayarajan said.In response to questions on the case against his son Jain Raj for the controversial Facebook post, Jayarajan said that law experts had pointed out that the case would not stand.
