Doctors to Launch New Initiative for Safe Sound

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Under the aegis of a group of doctors, a new initiative for safe sound will be launched.

The ‘National Initiative for Safe Sound’ with Dr John Panicker as president and Dr Sreejith N Kumar as secretary will be launched on Tuesday.

Chief Minister Oommen chandy will inaugurate the initiative atSubramaniam Hall here at 5.30 pm. Environment Minister Thiruvanchoor Radhakrishnan will attend the function. A handbook on ‘Safe Sound’ will be released by Health Minister V S Sivakumar.

Mayor K Chandrika will inaugurate the website.  Dr T Srinivasan, District Collector Biju Prabhakar, Former DGP Jacob Punnoose, ADGP  Rishiraj Singh, Dr A Marthandapillai, G Vijayaraghavan, Dr C Babu paul, E M Najeeb, P James and Prema Kumaran Nair will speak.

IMA, Thiruvananthapuram chapter president N Sulfi will propose a vote of thanks. Dr John Panicker and Dr Sreejith N Kumar said in a press release here that India was one of the countries facing high amount of sound pollution in the world. And the state faces high amount of sound pollution in the country. They pointed out that an over exposure to sound pollution would aggravate diseases such as blood pressure, diabetes, mental and emotional problems, asthma, fainting, insomnia and deafness.

They said that the general view that sound pollution was the byproduct of technical advancement cannot be accepted.

Excessive sound pollution could be restricted through effective sound control mechanism.

The doctors said that the excessive use of  sound horns in vehicles, operating machines in construction areas with high sound, unrestrained use of micro phones during the festivals are adding to the sound pollution. But they feel that effective awareness campaign would help reduce the pollution.

National initiative for safe sound will reach out to the students and media persons, advocates, social workers besides doctors. The organisations would spread its activities. A shortfilm featuring Mohanlal and Chithra directed by Rajiv Nath will be screened as part of the campaign.
