Police, IB Probing Authenticity of Maoist Leader's Video Message

MALAPPURAM: Police and Intelligence agencies have started investigation into the video message of Maoist leader Roopesh. They are investigating the authenticity and the source of the video message delivered to television channels in Kozhikode on Monday.

Sources with the anti- Maoist squad in the state said that the police are also checking the credibility of the claims made by the man in the video message.

The video message was circulated at a time hen CPI(Maoist) was celebrating its 10th anniversary in Chhattisgarh. Police have so many assumptions about the time and medium chosen to convey the message. “The slang used by the person in the video message is similar to the local language of Vadanappally in Thrissur district, the native place of Roopesh. The video gives prominence to exposing the weapon hanging from the shoulders of Roopesh.

They may be trying to communicate that they are well armed to engage in an armed rebellion. We believe that the video was shot somewhere in Kerala and distributed later,” sources with the anti- Maoist squad said, seeking anonymity.

Police also doubt that the video message was delivered as a strong reply to the notices distributed against Roopesh and his wife Shyna at Kannur under the banner of a staunch Left ideologist group a few weeks ago. The notice alleged that Roopesh and Shyna were working for Intelligence Bureau.

The video message may be the tactic of Roopesh to prove that he is still active in the field. He also aims some kind of publicity through such a message. “We will thoroughly check the video message in the name of Roopesh. The operation of anti-Maoist squad in the state is on the right track. We are doing the needful to tackle the extremist groups,” Kannur Range DIG Dinendra Kashyap, who is also incharge of the special task force to counter Maoist operations, said.

Different agencies have started investigation to check the authenticity of the video message. They are also checking the capacity of Maoists in Kerala to engage in an armed rebellion.
