THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The Kerala Science and Technology Museum (KSTM) is setting up an Innovation Hub, a space for innovators to make prototypes and even apply for patents. An initiative of National Innovation Council (NIC), the Hub will be a laboratory-cum-workshop where one can learn as well try their hands at welding, soldering and making something new _ all for an annual membership fee of Rs 1,000.
A fund of `1 crore has been allotted for it. The NIC will provide technical support for the innovators. Professors from IITs who are part of NIC will help you out if you are stuck with something. There will be people to help weld and solder in case your hands are not that dexterous.
The Hub aims to cater not just to the innovator, but the common man as well, according to KSTM Director Arul Jerald Prakash. “Young engineers and other technical students often feel at loss even after completing their courses. The common man is also curious to learn new things. The Hub will encourage everyone to ignite their interest in science and enjoy it,” he said.
‘Break and Remake
Corner’ is for learning how to repair everyday things such as an alarm clock, or a cycle. ‘Build from Scraps Corner’, will impart knowledge on making use of scrap materials like rubber or the magnet of a speaker to make things.
The Innovation Hall of Fame will have on display 10 to 15 scientific inventions that changed the world - a wheel, electricity and other things that have become part and parcel of our lives.
