KOTTAYAM: PG Medicos at the Kottayam Government Medical College Hospital went on a 24-hour flash strike on Monday, in the wake of the incident where a junior resident doctor was allegedly attacked by a patient and his bystanders on Sunday night.

According to hospital sources, a final year PG student of Surgery Department Dr K S Santhosh was allegedly attacked by Ragesh, hailing from Nedumthodiyil house, Neerikkad, when the latter was brought to Acute Care Room (ACR) with injuries. Ragesh and his bystanders, who were in an inebriated state, hurled verbal abuse against Dr Santhosh and allegedly manhandled him. The provocation for the attack happened to be the denial of their demanded for immediate medical attention when the doctor was attending another critical care patient.
According to Kerala Medical PG Association(KMPGA) leaders, the strike was organised for 24 hours starting from 8 am on Monday.
KMPGA secretary Dr P Bipin demanded that the attackers should be booked under the Hospital Protection Act 2012. “The authorities should ensure security of doctors, nurses and other staff members by increasing the number of security officials,” he said.
House Surgeons Association, Kerala Government Medical College Teachers Association and others extended support to the strike. The accused is undergoing treatment at the MCH and police have registered a case against him. Medical College authorities also instituted an inquiry into the incident.
