THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The ambitious Raigarh-Pugalur-Madakkathara power transmission project, which will see Kerala sourcing 2,000 megawatts (MW) from Chattisgarh, is expected to be commissioned in 2019. With the centre and state governments approving the project, efforts are on to set up a first-of-its-kind specialised sub-station at Madakkathara in Thrissur where Kerala’s share of power will be ‘off-loaded.’
The Kerala State Electricity Board (KSEB) and Power Grid Corporation of India Ltd (PGCIL), the central transmission utility which will establish the cross-country power corridor and the 400 KV High-Voltage Direct Current (HVDC) sub-station, has identified 45 acres of land owned by the Kerala Agricultural University (KAU) for the purpose.
This location is considered ideal as it is only 800 metres away from the existing 400 KV sub-station at Madakkathara.
“A KAU syndicate meet is to be held this week, and a final decision will be taken after that,” KSEB chairman M Sivasankar said. “The plan now is to commission the project in 2019,” he added. This project is crucial to Kerala.
