THRISSUR: Close on the heels of the bus accident at Thrissur KSRTC station, a decision has been taken to impart training to the RTC drivers to ensure that such incidents don’t recur. “Along with training, counselling will also be provided to the drivers,” said Assistant Transport Officer, K N Vishwanathan.

“We have also decided that the new KSRTC Volvo buses be operated mainly by experienced drivers. If someone is relatively new or has just completed training, a deputy will assist him/her,” said Regional Transport Officer, Abdul Kareem.

The new Volvo buses, plying on state roads, are very sophisticated, armed with facilities for easy drive. However, one needs to familiarise himself/herself with the technology first, he said.

A KSRTC low-floor Volvo bus  lost control and crashed into the Thrissur KSRTC stand, killing two, around 9 a.m. on Sunday. Two blind cricketers, Rajeeshkumar and Vinod, died in the mishap. The driver, Hamza, was taken into custody. According to transport officials, he had completed training only three months ago. The DTO, after watching the videotape of the accident, came to a preliminary conclusion that the mishap occurred when Hamza put a wrong gear to reverse the vehicle.
