13 Students at SAI Women's Hostel Fall Sick

KOTTAYAM:As many as 13 students at the women’s sports hostel of the SAI at Nagambadom were admitted to the District Hospital here on Tuesday with symptoms of food poisoning after they consumed food from the hostel the previous night. Students of Class IX to graduate students were among the sports persons admitted to the hospital.

Out of the 23 inmates, 13 students were admitted to the hospital in the wee hours of Tuesday after complaining of vomiting, dysentery and stomach pain. While three of were discharged after primary medical care, 10 students were kept for observation. The students in the hospital are Gopika, 12; Athira, 20; Anupriya, 16, Aswathy, 16, Preethi, 13, Swapna, 20; Arashana, 15; Haritha, 19; Joshly, 15; and Raji, 19.

According to Sajini, warden of the sports hostel, students who consumed vegetarian and non-vegetarian food on Monday night, complained of uneasiness and vomiting by 2 am on Tuesday and were rushed to the hospital. However, other students and staff members in the hostel did not show any symptoms. The conditions of the students were stable, said Dr. Jacob Varghese. DMO and Food Safety department officials, who inspected the hostel, found that the physical condition in the hostel was unhygienic as food waste was being kept for several days here.
