THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Even as the government decision to withdraw the case pertaining to the murder attempt on former chief secretary C P Nair has kicked up a row, a letter written by Nair in the last week of May asking Chief Minister Oommen Chandy not to withdraw the case, has come out.
In his letter, Nair told the Chief Minister that withdrawing the case would be equivalent to denying him justice. The letter, reportedly sent to the Chief Minister on May 26, pointed out that a case can be withdrawn if there’s a specific public interest. Before taking such a decision the prosecutor and the government have to go through it thoroughly and reasons for which have to be made clear.
This is a case where the state exchequer suffered some major losses and many policemen were severely injured. If a decision is taken to withdraw a case there should be some valid and compelling reasons. Nair in his letter, further added that withdrawing the case would be a violating his human rights as a law-abiding citizen.
Nair Got No Official Reply
Though the letter was sent in the last week of May, Nair did not receive any official reply from the government. However, despite such a letter, the government took a decision to withdraw the case, inviting protests from various corners.
It was in 2002 when C P Nair was serving as the Devaswom Commissioner that an attempt was made on his life, following a dispute over the Sathakodi Archana at Malayalapuzha temple. The June 12 government decision to withdraw the case kicked up a controversy following which the Chief Minister had put the onus on the Home Department.
