THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: State Police Chief T P Senkumar on Tuesday said that the police officials should set a paradigm model for the public in terms of following the traffic rules. In a circular issued here, Senkumar pointed out that flouting of traffic rules by the police in broad daylight has evoked acrimony and resentment among the public. Instances of traffic infractions by cops across the state, including, overspeeding, red light jumping, illegal parking and not wearing  helmets or seat belts, is a case in point, he said.

Moreover, accidents involving police vehicles that jumped the red light have also been widely reported. In many cases, traffic wardens have allowed the vehicles of top officials to hurtle through even while the red signal was still on. This would not be encouraged from now on. Hence, the traffic men should refrain from such dereliction of duty, the DGP said.

However, in emergency situations, the traffic wardens should swap the signal lights accordingly and enable a hassle-free traffic. As far as VIPs are concerned, including the President, Vice-President and Prime Minister, specific traffic arrangements should be put in place as per the special security scheme.

But all other dignitaries should inform their travel and route plan to the traffic control room well in advance and the respective traffic section should take the appropriate steps post haste.
