52 Houses Damaged, Crops Destroyed in Heavy Rain

MANANTHAVADY: A total of 52 houses were reportedly damaged in Wayanad district on Sunday after rain continued to lash the district for almost three consecutive days.

Of the 52 houses, four have been completely damaged. Three houses from Moopindu village and one from Padinjarathara village collapsed,  unable to withstand the heavy showers. Nearly 42 houses were reported to have been partially damaged across the district so far.

The District Administration has put the losses incurred in the past three days at `70 lakh. However, no compensation has been announced so far by the District Administration.

“The District Collector has not issued any directions as of now. Considering the seriousness of the situation, the District Administration will take the appropriate decision,” said an official of the Disaster Relief Control Room at the collectorate, requesting not to be named.

The district received 11 mm, 31.4 mm and 30.3 mm of rainfall on June 18, 19 and 20, respectively. According to Rajeesh PC, an official of Regional Agricultural and Research Station (RARS), Ambalavoyal, the trend of rainfall for this year is similar to that in June 2014. “Heavy rainfall will continue till June 22,” he added.

Besides damage to houses, reportedly 1,500 banana plants also perished in the heavy rain and strong winds that lashed the district on Sunday.

Holiday Declared

The District Collector has declared Monday a holiday for schools, colleges and all educational institutions.
