MG Varsity Observes International Yoga Day

KOTTAYAM: Yoga needs be promoted as a way of life for the health benefits followed by practising it, said Mahatma Gandhi University Vice-Chancelllor Dr Babu Sebastian at BK College, Amalagiri here on Sunday.

To list a few benefits, he said that Yoga brings in discipline, empowers the body and mind, prevents illness and induces body and mind control.

The Vice-Chancellor was speaking after inaugurating the university-level International Yoga Day celebrations, organised by the National Service Scheme (NSS).

According to him, Yoga incorporates epistemology, metaphysics, ethical practices, systematic exercises and self-development techniques for body, mind and spirit.

“Yoga motivates one to uphold the values like abstentions from the social evils,  contentment, perseverance and austerity. The students and the teachers will be benefited by practising yoga on a daily basis, for which the university is determined to provide opportunities,”he said.

Pro-Vice-Chancellor (PVC) Dr Sheena Shukkoor presided over the event. As many as 500 students clad in white clothes displayed various yoga postures.

The Vice-Chancellor flagged off the event by taking Vrikshaasana posture. An exhibition of 220 yoga postures featuring Dr Toms Abraham were also on display.

National Service Scheme  Programme Coordinator Dr K Sabukuttan, Public Relations Officer G Sreekumar, M R Gopalakrishnan Nair, M S ViswambharanNair, Dr Toms Abraham and Sr Manju Jacob also spoke. More than 10,000 students, who participated in the programme arranged in 220 centres, were given training.
