THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj acted on humanitarian grounds in helping former IPL commissioner Lalit Modi in the visa issue, Union Law Minister D V Sadananda Gowda said here on Sunday.
Addressing a meet-the-press programme organised by the Thiruvananthapuram Press Club, Gowda said that Swaraj merely helped Modi as he had to visit his wife who was undergoing treatment for cancer. Calling Swaraj’s action “part of the nation’s culture,” Gowda said that no corruption was involved in the issue. “Nowhere has Sushma Swaraj spoken about any illegal transaction being made; only some travel documents for a specific purpose, and no transaction or business in this regard has any blot of corruption,” he said. On Lalit Modi’s dealings with Rajasthan Chief Minister Vasundhara Raje’s son, he said that “there was no corrupt collusion. There is no basis for the allegations levelled by the Congress.
The incident took place in 2010, prevented Congress from taking action for four years?” he asked. On senior party leader L K Advani’s remark, Gowda said that it was not aimed at any individual. He also denied that there was interference from the Prime Minister’s Office in the workings of other ministries.
