Chandy Writes to Jaya

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM:Chief Minister Oommen Chandy expressed his concern over the Mullaperiyar dam to his Tamil Nadu counterpart J Jayalalithaa. In his letter Chandy sought Jayalalitha’s personal attention into the issue. “The Government of Kerala is extremely concerned about the potential danger for people living downstream by a sudden, emergent opening of spillway gates; as also the submergence of forest land with wild animals,” it stated.Chandy requested Jayalalithaa to issue strict directions to her officials to start at once the discharge of water in a controlled manner and to increase withdrawal to the Vaigai reservoir. He pointed out that officials of Tamil Nadu were reluctant for a reliable spillway operation as desired by the Supervisory Committee on the dam. The letter stated the storage space available up to the admissible level of above 142 feet in the reservoir was 540 mcft.It mentioned that the possibility of higher than 100 mm rainfall in the area will make the situation worse.
