Tippers Killed 827 People in Past 5 Years

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM:  It’s no news that speeding ‘tipper’ lorries have triggered a large number of complaints from the public. But did you know that as many as 827 people have been killed in accidents involving tipper lorries in the past five years?

“The largest number of deaths have occurred in Ernakulam district - 157. Of this, rural Ernakulam  accounts for 114 deaths and the city limits, 43,” Transport Minister Thiruvanchoor Radhakrishnan said in a written reply to the Assembly on Monday.  Malappuram is second among the districts with 116 deaths reported in the past five years.

Kozhikode district with 90 deaths and Kottayam with 65 deaths are third and fourth on the list submitted by the minister. Thiruvananthapuram reported 60 deaths with 42 of them occurring in the rural areas of the district. Thrissur reported a slightly higher number at 68, Alappuzha 53, Kollam 48 and Kannur, 44.
