Government Will Provide Free Insulin Pumps to Kids

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: In a humane initiative, the Cabinet on Wednesday has decided to provide free insulin pumps to diabetic children in the state. Similar to the government’s successful cochlear implant programme, the project will be implemented through the social justice department.

Speaking after the cabinet session, Chief Minister Oommen Chandy said diabetes cases among the children have increased. “Due to high expenses, many families cannot afford the treatment. Two applications for financial aid came before the cabinet today itself,” the CM said.

“Since insulin pumps are the only treatment available, we have decided to make them available to children free of cost. Social justice minister M K Muneer has been entrusted to hold discussions with those who can supply the pumps at a reduced rate,” Chandy said.

The scheme will be applicable to children from both APL and BPL categories, and kids up to the age of 18 would be considered, though final decision would be based on medical advice.
