Vellappally Effect: Chandy to Keep Off Function

Chief Minister Oommen Chandy will keep away from R Sankar’s statue unveiling ceremony scheduled on Kollam S N College campus on December 15.

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM:  Chief Minister Oommen Chandy will keep away from R Sankar’s statue unveiling ceremony scheduled on Kollam S N College campus on December 15, which will have Prime Minister Narendra Modi as the chief guest. ‘’I’m not participating in the function to unveil the statue of R Sankar, former Chief Minister and KPCC president, bowing to the request of the organisers. I’m profoundly sad,’’ said Chandy who was supposed to preside over the function on Tuesday.

The development is believed to be a fallout of the growing rift between the SNDP Yogam, which had recently floated the political outfit BDJS and pitched tent in the Sangh Parivaar camp, and the Congress. SNDP Yogam general secretary Vellappally Natesan telephoned

Chandy and urged him to ‘help’ by abstaining from the function since ‘there is protest from some quarters against the participation of the Chief Minister in the function’. It was Vellappally himself who had invited Chandy to preside over the function. Chandy said it was his bounden duty to participate in the function. ‘’R Sankar was the KPCC president and Chief Minister of the state. I had a responsibility to participate in the function attended by the Prime Minister as per protocol and by way of courtesy. Since the organisers who had invited me have taken a new stand, I have to change my decision,’’ he said
