Govt Vows Time-bound Welfare Pension

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM:  Call it the government’s Christmas gift, as the Cabinet on Wednesday decided to issue welfare pensions to 32 lakh pensioners on 18th of every month. The disbursal of pension under various categories has been delayed for 11 months.

The state government would have to find `200 every month to accomplish its promise and the Chief Minister would draw his salary only after receiving a report from the finance department on issuance of pensions.

“Some of the pensions were delayed from 6 to 11 months. Now, pension distribution will be done in the same manner as salaries are being distributed. Pensions will be given on 18th of every month,” Oommen Chandy said.

 The Chief Minister said arrears will also be given soon.  The Cabinet also decided to extend the moratorium for rewpayment of loans taken by fishermen from various establishments by one more year. The current moratorium ends on December 31. The Cabinet has also decided to take a more liberal approach in repayment of loans issued by the Housing Board. The government also decided to implement the Relief Project 2016 for repayment of loans from cooperative societies. The relief project will be for a period of 90 days from January 1, 2016. Along with this, the instalments for loan repayment have been increased from 10 to 20.
