Two Pilgrims Drown in Achenkovil River

PATHANAMTHITTA:  Two pilgrims drowned in the Achenkovil river at Uzhuvathu kadavu in Omallur near here at 9 am on Monday.

The drowned are Suni, (Santharam) 44, Saraswathi Sadanam, Serikonam, Kottiyam in Kollam district and his nephew Suresh, 27, of Chathannur in Kollam.

The unfortunate incident happened when Suni slipped into the river from the rock on the side of river. Suresh fell into the river while trying to rescue Suni. The 26-member group of pilgrims, accompanying the deceased, alerted the nearby people who informed the Fire and Rescue personnel. The fire force team fished out the bodies at 2 pm. The bodies were sent to the native place of the victims after postmortem.

The team of pilgrims was on the 12th year of pilgrimage to Sabarimala by walking from Kollam.

Travancore Devaswom Board president Prayar Gopalakrishnan visited Pathanamthitta General Hospital where the bodies of the drowned pilgrims were brought for postmortem. After visiting the hospital, the TDB president said that measures would be taken on extending financial assistance to the families of the victims, including the insurance amount. Gopalakrishnan urged the district administration to put up display boards and hoardings at temple kadavus where the pilgrims take bath.
