Rights Panel fiat on Missing Naval Officer

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The State Human Rights Commission on Monday directed immediate action on an application submitted to the Chief Minister seeking compensation for the family of the Naval officer who went missing while trying to rescue a mother and a child from drowning.

The application was filed by social activist Jomon Puthenpurackal to give `10 lakh as compensation for the family of Vishnu Unni, who was a sailor with the Navy.

Vishnu Unni went missing while trying to rescue a woman who jumped off Venduruthi bridge in Kochi with her seven-month-old child. Though the mother could be saved, the child died and Vishnu went missing. The incident happened on October 3 last year. Vishnu was awarded Nao Sena Medal for gallantry posthumously. He hailed from Trithala. The Ernakulam District Police Chief said Vishnu could not be traced even after a rigorous search. “Vishnu was born to  a poor family and was the only bread-winner of the family. His parents are aged and sister is a student. Hence, the family deserves the compensation,”said Commission Chairman Justice J B Koshy.
