THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Former Comptroller and Auditor General (CAG) Vinod Rai has told the Supreme Court that 266 kg of gold has gone missing from the Sree

Padmanabhaswami temple here.Rai, assigned by the Supreme Court to audit the temple’s assets, made the revelation in his 1,800-page report submitted recently.

The report said 893.44 kg gold was taken from the temple vault and handed over to a private contractor for “melting and purification”. But only 627 kg was returned. The report faulted the entire exercise as the temple did not check the quality of the gold before giving it to the contractor. The report said the Travancore royal family, which managed the temple, could not submit documents of the temple’s assets. The accounts were defective and there were no record of the gold and silver received by the temple as devotees’ donation during the 2008-09 period, it said.
